CRACK! “I hit it, Daddy,” yelled Jake. “I hit it!” Jake’s Daddy’s two arms were lifted toward the sky as he excitedly answered, “That was a great one Jake. Good Job!” On nice days Jake and his Daddy often played baseball outside in the yard. It was Jake’s favorite time of day. One day while Jake’s Daddy was away from the house running errands, with his little brother, Jake’s Mom took him with her to visit a garage sale. At the yard sale, Jake saw lots of toys and stuff. Mommy said, “You must not touch, Jake.” But it was so hard when there were so many interesting toys.
Suddenly, Jake spotted a baseball. Forgetting what his Mom had said, Jake became excited and reached up to touch the baseball. As his hand stroked the ball, he heard a voice. It was the baseball talking to Jake. Jake knows that baseballs can’t talk. He thought, “This is funny.” The ball kept saying, “Take me home! I will play with you.” Jake was so surprised. He ran to his Mommy, tugged at her skirt and said, “Mommy, Mommy, please come see the baseball that talks. Can I have it?” “What do you mean? A baseball can’t talk, Jake.” said Mommy. “This one can. Come see!” Jake ran over to the ball. He touched it as he had done before, but nothing happened. The ball did not talk. “Mommy, it talked to me before. Can I have it? I can buy it with my dollar?”
